The Hong Kong dollar is the official currency of Hong Kong, overseen by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. One dollar divides into 100 cents, and notes run from HK$10 up to HK$1,000.
Hong Kong does something almost no other place does: its banknotes are printed by three different commercial banks - HSBC, Standard Chartered and the Bank of China - each with its own designs. That means two HK$100 notes can look nothing alike and both are completely valid. Only the HK$10 is issued by the government itself.
You will see the same amount written as HK$ or with a plain dollar sign. It is a separate currency from the Chinese yuan, and yuan is not generally accepted in Hong Kong shops, so a trip that takes in both places needs both currencies.
Whether you are heading to Hong Kong or coming home with leftover cash, you can buy and sell Hong Kong dollar notes over the counter at our Auburn store - 0% commission, and the rate you see on this page is the rate you get.

Three banks issue Hong Kong banknotes, each with its own artwork, so your HK$100 may look nothing like the last one you were handed. They are all legal tender and all spend normally. It surprises first-time visitors, but there is nothing wrong with the note.
HK$20 and HK$50 notes are the most useful for market stalls, taxis and small restaurants - a HK$1,000 is hard to break.
The Octopus card pays for the MTR, buses, ferries and a lot of convenience stores. You top it up with cash, so arrive with some.
Street markets and the open-air food stalls Hong Kong is known for often take cash only, even where the malls next door are fully contactless.
