The dirham is the official currency of the United Arab Emirates, issued and regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE. It replaced the Qatar and Dubai riyal in 1973, two years after the emirates federated, and is written Dh or AED.
One dirham divides into 100 fils. Notes run Dh5, Dh10, Dh20, Dh50, Dh100, Dh200, Dh500 and Dh1,000, and the coins you will actually use are 25 fils, 50 fils and Dh1. The smaller fils coins still exist on paper but have effectively vanished from tills.
The UAE is easy to spend in by card across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but cash still moves through taxis, souks, smaller cafes and the older parts of both cities, and it is what you will want for haggling.
Whether you are heading to the UAE or coming home with leftover cash, you can buy and sell dirham notes over the counter at our Auburn store - 0% commission, and the rate you see on this page is the rate you get.

Since 1997 the dirham has been fixed at 3.6725 to the US dollar, and it has not moved since. That means the rate you get here does not really follow anything happening in the UAE - it follows the Australian dollar against the US dollar. If the Aussie is having a strong week against the greenback, dirhams are cheaper for you that week.
Dh5, Dh10 and Dh20 notes are the useful ones. Taxi drivers and market stalls often cannot break a Dh500, and it slows everything down.
In the gold, spice and textile souks the first price is an opening offer, not the price. Cash in hand gives you a much better position than a card.
Malls, hotels, restaurants and the metro all take contactless without a problem, so you do not need to carry large amounts.
Buy your dirhams here so you are not caught out by airport rates on arrival.
Two cities built at extraordinary speed, a desert that starts where they end, and souks that have been trading a great deal longer than either.
