The pound sterling is the official currency of the United Kingdom - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - along with the Crown dependencies and several British overseas territories. It is one of the oldest currencies still in use anywhere in the world, and it is accepted everywhere in the UK for day-to-day spending.
It is issued by the Bank of England, and one pound divides into 100 pence. Today's notes are polymer rather than paper, and run from £5 to £50, with coins from 1p up to £2. Sterling is not the euro - if your trip also takes in Ireland or mainland Europe, you will need euros as well.
You will see two sets of notes in circulation. Notes carrying King Charles III entered circulation in June 2024 and now sit alongside the earlier Queen Elizabeth II notes pictured here. Both designs are legal tender and both spend normally, so there is no need to swap one for the other.
Whether you are heading to the UK or coming home with leftover cash, you can buy and sell pound notes over the counter at our Auburn store - 0% commission, and the rate you see on this page is the rate you get.

Banks in Scotland and Northern Ireland issue their own pound notes. They are the same currency and spend freely there, but shops in England sometimes hesitate over them, and they can be harder to change back once you are outside the UK. If you are choosing, Bank of England notes travel the most easily.
£5, £10 and £20 notes are the most useful for cafes, markets and black cabs - some small shops will not break a £50.
Restaurants often add a service charge of about 12.5% already. If it is on the bill, there is no need to tip again - and nobody tips at the pub bar.
Cards work almost everywhere, including buses and the Tube. Cash is still handy for markets, small cafes and tips.
