About the Chinese Yuan

The yuan is the official currency of the People's Republic of China. Strictly, the currency itself is called the renminbi - "the people's currency" - while the yuan is the unit you actually count in, much the same way sterling is the currency and pounds are the units. On international markets it is quoted as CNY, and it is issued by the People's Bank of China.

One yuan divides into 10 jiao, and each jiao into 10 fen, so there are 100 fen to the yuan. Fen have effectively disappeared from everyday use. Notes run from ¥1 to ¥100 and coins cover 1 jiao, 5 jiao and ¥1.

Every note in circulation carries the same portrait, with the value shown in both numerals and Chinese characters. Because the ¥100 is the largest note, a big amount of yuan is a physically thick stack - worth keeping in mind when you decide how much cash to carry.

China travel money tips

Good to know: China runs on mobile payment, but cash still works everywhere

Alipay and WeChat Pay QR codes are used for almost everything in China, and setting them up as a visitor can be fiddly. Foreign Visa and Mastercard are often declined outside international hotels. Yuan cash is the simplest fallback and is accepted everywhere, which matters most outside the big cities.

Carry small notes

¥1, ¥5, ¥10 and ¥20 notes are the most useful for taxis, buses and markets - a ¥100 can be hard to break for a small purchase.

Do not rely on your card

Foreign cards work in some hotels and department stores, but plenty of restaurants, taxis and small shops take only cash or a local QR wallet.

Cash for street food and markets

Night markets, street stalls and small family restaurants are where cash is most useful - and where a lot of the best eating is.

Plan your cash before you fly

Buy your yuan here so you are not caught out by airport rates or a card that will not work on arrival.
