About the Thai Baht
The baht is the official currency of Thailand, issued and regulated by the Bank of Thailand. It has been in use since 1897 and is quoted internationally as THB.
One baht divides into 100 satang, though satang barely appear in everyday life - prices are almost always whole baht. Notes run from 20 to 1,000 baht and coins cover 1, 2, 5 and 10 baht, with 25 and 50 satang coins still technically in circulation.
Thailand is a cash country far more than Australia is. Cards are fine in malls, hotels and larger restaurants, but street food, markets, tuk-tuks, songthaews and small guesthouses generally want baht in hand.

Thailand travel money tips
Good to know: treat Thai banknotes with care
Thai notes and coins carry an image of the King. Defacing money, or stepping on a note to stop it blowing away, is treated as a serious matter in Thailand and can be an offence. Hand notes over with your right hand, and keep them flat rather than screwed up in a pocket.
Carry small notes
20, 50 and 100 baht notes are the most useful. A 1,000 baht note is hard to break at a street stall or in a tuk-tuk.
Street food is cash only
Night markets, street carts and small family kitchens almost never take cards, and that is where most of the best eating is.
ATMs charge a flat fee
Thai ATMs add a fixed fee per foreign withdrawal on top of your bank's charges, so lots of small withdrawals get expensive quickly.
