The euro is the official currency of the eurozone - the group of European Union countries that share it, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Greece, Portugal and Ireland. Euro cash was introduced on 1 January 2002, replacing national currencies such as the French franc, the German mark, the Italian lira and the Spanish peseta.
It is issued and managed by the European Central Bank, and one euro divides into 100 cents. Because the same notes and coins work across every eurozone country, one currency covers a multi-country European trip - and any euros you bring home can be sold back to us.
You may still see a €500 note pictured on older charts. The European Central Bank stopped issuing it in 2019, so it is no longer printed - existing notes remain legal tender, but they are rarely seen and many shops will not accept them. Today's notes run from €5 to €200.
Whether you are heading to Europe or coming home with leftover cash, you can buy and sell euro notes over the counter at our Auburn store - 0% commission, and the rate you see on this page is the rate you get.

When a European card machine or ATM offers to charge you in Australian dollars, decline it and choose euros. That "helpful" conversion adds its own exchange rate on top - paying in the local currency is almost always cheaper.
€5, €10 and €20 notes are the most useful for cafes, markets and taxis - some small shops will not take €200.
The same euros work across the eurozone, so you do not need to change money again as you cross borders.
Unlike the US, tipping in Europe is usually rounding up or about 5 to 10% - handy to have coins and small notes.
Buy your euros here so you are not caught out by airport rates or ATM fees on arrival.
From world-famous cities to island coastlines, the eurozone packs a lot into one trip - and a little euro cash on hand makes the day-to-day easier wherever you go.
