About the Japanese Yen

The yen is the official currency of Japan, issued and regulated by the Bank of Japan. It has been in use since 1871 and is one of the most traded currencies in the world, sitting behind only the US dollar and the euro.

One yen divides into 100 sen, but sen stopped circulating in 1953 and you will never be handed one. Notes run ¥1,000, ¥2,000, ¥5,000 and ¥10,000, though the ¥2,000 note is so rarely seen that many Japanese people go years without handling one. Coins cover ¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥50, ¥100 and ¥500.

Japan is a far more cash-based country than Australia is. Cards are fine in city hotels, chain stores and larger restaurants, but small restaurants, temple entries, markets, older guesthouses and plenty of rural shops still want yen in hand.

Japan travel money tips

Good to know: Japan still runs on cash

For a country this technically advanced, Japan expects cash far more than visitors imagine. Many small restaurants, shrines and family shops take nothing else. It also catches people out that plenty of Japanese ATMs will not read a foreign card at all - the ones inside 7-Eleven stores and Japan Post branches are the dependable exceptions. Arriving with yen already in your pocket avoids the whole problem.

Coins are worth real money

The ¥500 coin is worth roughly A$4.50 and the ¥100 about A$0.90, so Japanese change adds up fast. Keep a coin purse rather than emptying your pockets into a drawer.

Small places are often cash only

Ramen counters, izakaya, market stalls and neighbourhood restaurants frequently take no cards at all, and they are where a lot of the best eating happens.

There is no tipping in Japan

Tipping is not customary and can genuinely confuse or embarrass staff. The price you are shown is the price you pay, so budget without adding anything on top.

Plan your cash before you fly

Buy your yen here so you are not caught out by airport rates on arrival.
