About the Fijian Dollar
The Fijian dollar is the official currency of Fiji, issued and regulated by the Reserve Bank of Fiji. It replaced the Fijian pound in 1969 and is the everyday currency across all three hundred or so islands.
One dollar divides into 100 cents. Notes run FJ$5, FJ$10, FJ$20, FJ$50 and FJ$100, and coins cover 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, FJ$1 and FJ$2. The 1c and 2c coins were withdrawn in 2008, so cash totals are rounded at the counter.
Fiji did something unusual in 2013: it took the monarch's portrait off its money and replaced it with native plants and animals. The notes now carry the kulawai parrot, the beli fish and the nanai cicada, which makes Fijian currency some of the more distinctive you will handle.

Good to know: cash matters once you leave the main island
Nadi, Denarau and the larger resorts take cards without trouble. Step onto a boat to the Yasawas or Mamanucas and it changes completely - island resorts, village stalls, boat transfers and handicraft markets frequently want cash, and ATMs are effectively a mainland thing. Take enough Fijian dollars with you for the whole island stay.
Carry small notes
FJ$5, FJ$10 and FJ$20 notes are the useful ones for markets, taxis, village visits and tips. A FJ$100 is awkward almost everywhere outside a resort.
Cards work in Nadi and the resorts
Hotels, larger restaurants and the main supermarkets take cards, so you do not need to carry everything as cash for the mainland part of a trip.
Sevusevu when you visit a village
Visitors to a Fijian village traditionally present a gift of kava root to the chief. You buy it at any market for a few dollars, and it is worth having the cash on you before you go.
