About the Indian Rupee
The rupee is the official currency of India, issued by the Reserve Bank of India. It is among the oldest currency names still in use, with roots going back to the silver rupiya of the sixteenth century.
One rupee divides into 100 paise, though paise coins have all but vanished and prices settle on whole rupees. Notes run ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹200 and ₹500, and coins cover ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10 and ₹20. The ₹2,000 note was withdrawn from circulation in 2023.
India has moved to digital payment faster than almost anywhere, and UPI codes are pasted up at even small stalls. That system is built for Indian bank accounts, though, so as a visitor you will still want cash for autos, markets, temples, tips and anywhere off the main tourist track.

Good to know: India limits how many rupees you can carry in and out
The Reserve Bank of India sets limits on carrying Indian currency across the border, and the allowance is not the same for everyone - Indian residents and other travellers are treated differently, and the figures have changed more than once. It is worth checking the current Reserve Bank of India position for your own situation before you fly, rather than assuming. Come and talk to us at the counter and we will help you think it through.
Small notes make everything easier
₹10, ₹20, ₹50 and ₹100 notes cover autos, chai, tips and temple donations. Drivers and stalls very often cannot change a ₹500.
UPI is everywhere, but it is not for visitors
The QR codes you see at every stall run on Indian bank accounts. As a visitor you generally cannot use them, which is exactly why cash still matters.
Markets and autos run on cash
Hotels, malls and chain restaurants take cards. Bazaars, auto-rickshaws, small dhabas and rural travel do not.
