About the Turkish Lira
The lira is the official currency of Türkiye, issued by the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye. The current lira dates from 2005, when six zeros were removed from the old one.
One lira divides into 100 kuruş. Notes run ₺5, ₺10, ₺20, ₺50, ₺100 and ₺200, and coins cover 5, 10, 25 and 50 kuruş plus ₺1. Every note carries a portrait of Atatürk on the front.
Türkiye is easy to pay for by card in the cities - contactless is common, including on public transport. Where cash still matters is the bazaars, the smaller lokantas, taxis, tips, village stops and anywhere you intend to bargain.

Good to know: the lira moves more than most currencies
Türkiye has been through a long stretch of high inflation, and the lira has moved a great deal against the Australian dollar in that time. Practically, that means two things: the rate you see on this page can look quite different a few weeks from now, so it is worth checking again close to your trip, and prices inside Türkiye itself change faster than you may be used to. It is also why plenty of people change smaller amounts more often rather than all of it at once.
Bazaars run on cash and bargaining
In the Grand Bazaar or the Spice Bazaar the first price is an opening offer. Cash in hand gives you far more room than a card does.
Cards work well in the cities
Istanbul, Izmir and Antalya take contactless almost everywhere, including the trams and ferries, so you do not need to carry everything as cash.
Keep small notes for tips and taxis
₺5, ₺10 and ₺20 notes cover tea, tips, taxis and small stalls. Larger notes are awkward outside shops and restaurants.
