About the Pakistani Rupee
The rupee is the official currency of Pakistan, issued and regulated by the State Bank of Pakistan. It has been the country's currency since independence in 1947, when it replaced the Indian rupee at par.
One rupee divides into 100 paise, though paise coins no longer circulate and prices are always in whole rupees. Notes run Rs10, Rs20, Rs50, Rs100, Rs500, Rs1,000 and Rs5,000, and coins cover Rs1, Rs2, Rs5 and Rs10.
Pakistan runs on cash to a degree that surprises people. Cards work in the big hotels, city supermarkets and chain restaurants, but bazaars, transport, guesthouses, guides and almost everything in the north expect rupees in hand.

Pakistan travel money tips
Good to know: the north runs on cash entirely
Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi have working ATMs and cards in the larger places. Head up the Karakoram Highway towards Hunza, Skardu or Gilgit and that stops being true - machines are scarce, they run out, and a card is close to useless. Travellers going north generally carry the whole trip's cash from a city, and it is worth planning that before you leave Australia.
Rs5,000 notes are hard to spend
The largest note is awkward almost everywhere outside a hotel. Break it early and keep Rs100, Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes for daily use.
Bazaars are cash and negotiation
In Lahore's old city or Karachi's markets the price moves, and cash in hand is what settles it.
Cards work in the big cities only
Hotels, malls and chain restaurants in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad take cards. Assume nothing else does.
