The Singapore dollar is the official currency of Singapore, issued and regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. It has been in use since 1967, when Singapore began issuing its own currency after independence from Malaysia.
One dollar divides into 100 cents. The notes you will actually be handed today run from S$2 to S$100, and coins cover 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c and S$1. Singapore is one of the easiest places in the world to spend by card, but cash still matters in the places most worth eating in.
You may see much larger notes on older charts. The S$10,000 stopped being issued in 2014 and the S$1,000 in 2021, both to reduce money-laundering risk. Existing notes remain legal tender but are rarely seen, and many shops will not take them.
Whether you are heading to Singapore or coming home with leftover cash, you can buy and sell Singapore dollar notes over the counter at our Auburn store - 0% commission, and the rate you see on this page is the rate you get.

Singapore withdrew the S$10,000 note in 2014 and the S$1,000 in 2021. They are still legal tender, but they are rarely seen and plenty of shops will refuse them. For spending money, S$50 and S$100 notes are the practical top end.
Hawker stalls and wet markets are where Singapore eats best, and many are cash only or take a local QR wallet visitors cannot easily set up.
S$2, S$5 and S$10 notes are the most useful for hawker food, buses and small shops - a S$100 is awkward for a S$5 plate of rice.
Malls, restaurants, taxis and the MRT all take contactless, so you do not need to carry large amounts of cash.
