The New Zealand dollar is the official currency of New Zealand, issued and regulated by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. It has been in use since 1967, when it replaced the New Zealand pound, and it is also the everyday currency of the Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau and the Pitcairn Islands.
One dollar divides into 100 cents. The notes are polymer and run from NZ$5 to NZ$100, each carrying a notable New Zealander on one side and a native bird on the other. Coins cover 10c, 20c, 50c, NZ$1 and NZ$2.
It is a different currency from the Australian dollar, and Australian cash is not accepted for everyday spending in New Zealand. The shared "dollar" name catches people out - you will need New Zealand dollars for everything from a coffee to a bus fare, and the two currencies trade at different values.

New Zealand has no 1, 2 or 5 cent coins - the smallest is 10c. When you pay in cash the total is rounded to the nearest 10 cents, so a NZ$4.97 bill becomes NZ$5.00 and NZ$4.93 becomes NZ$4.90. Card payments are charged the exact amount.
NZ$5, NZ$10 and NZ$20 notes are the most useful for cafes, markets and small-town shops.
Unlike the US, there is no tipping culture in New Zealand. Staff are paid a full wage, so a tip is a bonus for something special, not an obligation.
Cards and contactless work almost anywhere, but keep some cash for weekend markets, small towns and remote parts of the South Island.
