About the Canadian Dollar

The Canadian dollar is the official currency of Canada, issued and regulated by the Bank of Canada. It has been in use since 1858, when it replaced the Canadian pound, and it is one of the most widely held reserve currencies in the world.

One dollar divides into 100 cents. Every note is polymer rather than paper and they run from C$5 to C$100. There are no C$1 or C$2 notes - those are coins, known to everyone in Canada as the loonie and the toonie, so your change builds up faster than you expect.

It is a different currency from the Australian and US dollars. US dollars are occasionally accepted near the border but usually at a poor rate, so it is worth carrying Canadian dollars for anything outside the airport.

Canada travel money tips

Good to know: there is no more penny, so cash rounds to the nearest 5 cents

Canada stopped making the one-cent coin in 2012. When you pay cash the total is rounded to the nearest five cents, so a C$10.02 bill becomes C$10.00 and C$10.03 becomes C$10.05. Card payments are still charged the exact amount.

Loonies and toonies add up

C$1 and C$2 are coins, not notes, so a pocket of change in Canada can quietly be worth C$20. Spend it before you fly home - we buy back notes, not coins.

Tipping is expected

Unlike New Zealand, tipping is part of the bill in Canada - around 15 to 20% in restaurants and bars, and card terminals will prompt you for it.

Cards work almost everywhere

Contactless is standard across Canada, so cash is mostly for tips, markets, small cafes and parking.

Plan your cash before you fly

Buy your Canadian dollars here so you are not caught out by airport rates on arrival.
