About the Malaysian Ringgit
The ringgit is the official currency of Malaysia, issued by Bank Negara Malaysia, the country's central bank. The name means "jagged" in Malay - a reference to the serrated edges of the Spanish silver dollars that circulated in the region centuries ago.
One ringgit divides into 100 sen. Notes run from RM1 to RM100 and coins cover 5, 10, 20 and 50 sen. Prices are usually written as RM before the amount, so a RM12 plate of noodles is twelve ringgit.
Malaysia is easy to spend in with a card in Kuala Lumpur and the main tourist areas, but the country runs on cash the moment you step outside them - and that is where a lot of the best food is.

Good to know: cash still rules outside the cities
Kuala Lumpur, Penang and the resort areas take cards almost everywhere. Step outside them and it changes fast: night markets, hawker stalls, small-town shops, rural guesthouses and most taxis want ringgit in hand. Carry more cash than you would in Australia.
Carry small notes
RM1, RM5 and RM10 notes are the most useful for hawker food, taxis and markets - a RM100 is awkward for a RM8 meal.
Night markets are cash only
Pasar malam stalls, street food and small family restaurants almost never take cards, and they are where Malaysia eats best.
Cards work in the cities
Malls, hotels and chain restaurants in KL and Penang take contactless without trouble, so you do not need to carry everything in cash.
