About the Saudi Riyal

The riyal is the official currency of Saudi Arabia, issued and regulated by the Saudi Central Bank, still widely known by its old initials SAMA. It has been the kingdom's currency since it was founded in 1932.

One riyal divides into 100 halalas. Notes run SR5, SR10, SR50, SR100, SR200 and SR500, and coins cover 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 halalas plus SR1 and SR2. In practice the small halala coins are rare and prices tend to land on whole riyals.

Saudi Arabia has moved quickly towards card and phone payments, and in Riyadh and Jeddah you can get through most days without cash. It is a different story around the holy sites, in older markets and with smaller drivers and traders, where riyals in hand are still the simplest thing.

Saudi Arabia travel money tips

Good to know: travelling for Umrah or Hajj

Most people buying riyals over our counter are going for Umrah or Hajj rather than a holiday, and that trip has its own cash rhythm. Small notes are what you want: for taxis between the haram and the hotel, for luggage porters, for Zamzam water and dates to bring home, and for gifts from the markets around the mosques. Card works in the big hotels and malls, but very little else about the day runs on it.

Small notes make the trip easier

SR5, SR10 and SR50 notes cover taxis, porters, water and market stalls. A SR500 is difficult to break outside a hotel or a large shop.

Cards are fine in the cities

Riyadh and Jeddah take cards almost everywhere, and Saudi Arabia has moved to phone payments faster than most of the region.

Dress and timing around the holy sites

Shops around the haram close during prayer times and reopen afterwards, so keep enough cash on you to avoid being caught between closures.

Plan your cash before you fly

Buy your riyals here so you are not caught out by airport rates on arrival.
