The peso is the official currency of the Philippines, issued and regulated by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. It has been in use since 1852, which makes it one of the older currencies still circulating in Asia.
One peso divides into 100 centavos, though centavos barely register in daily life. Notes run ₱50, ₱100, ₱200, ₱500 and ₱1,000, and coins cover 1, 5, 10 and 20 piso. The ₱20 note has been replaced by a ₱20 coin, so you may be handed either.
The Philippines is a cash country the moment you leave Manila and Cebu. Malls, hotels and chain restaurants take cards, but jeepneys, tricycles, sari-sari stores, island ferries and most of the places worth eating in want pesos.
Whether you are heading to the Philippines or coming home with leftover cash, you can buy and sell peso notes over the counter at our Auburn store - 0% commission, and the rate you see on this page is the rate you get.

This is the one that catches Australians out. Most ATMs in the Philippines cap a single withdrawal at around ₱10,000, which is roughly A$250, and charge a fixed fee of about ₱250 on top - before your own bank adds anything. On a two-week island trip that adds up to real money, and taking pesos with you avoids most of it.
Nobody on a tricycle or at a sari-sari store can change a ₱1,000. Break them at a mall or supermarket and keep ₱20, ₱50 and ₱100 notes for everyday spending.
Once you are off Luzon and Cebu, card acceptance drops away fast. Island resorts, boat transfers, guides and small restaurants generally want pesos.
Malls, hotels and larger restaurants in the cities take cards without trouble, so you do not need to carry everything at once.
Buy your pesos here so you are not caught out by airport rates on arrival.
