The dong is the official currency of Vietnam, issued and regulated by the State Bank of Vietnam. The current dong dates from 1978, when north and south were brought onto one currency after reunification.
One dong technically divides into 10 hao or 100 xu, but neither has meant anything for decades. Notes run ₫1,000 up to ₫500,000, with the higher denominations printed on polymer. Vietnam is one of the few countries where coins have effectively disappeared - they were minted in the 2000s and quietly stopped circulating.
Vietnam is very much a cash country outside the hotel lobbies. Street food, markets, xe om drivers, cafes, tailors in Hoi An and most small shops want dong in hand, and many of them still prefer it even where a card would technically work.
Whether you are heading to Vietnam or coming home with leftover cash, you can buy and sell dong notes over the counter at our Auburn store - 0% commission, and the rate you see on this page is the rate you get.

Popular notes are usually in stock to walk in. For a big order, call 02 9643 9224 and we will have it ready.
Two things catch people out. The first is scale: ₫500,000 is only about A$30, so everyday prices run into the hundreds of thousands. The second is the notes themselves - the ₫20,000 and the ₫500,000 are both blue-green polymer and are very easy to confuse when you are tired or it is dark. That is a twenty-five times difference. Check the number of zeros before you hand a note over.
₫10,000, ₫20,000 and ₫50,000 notes cover street food, coffee and short rides. Nobody at a pho cart can break a ₫500,000.
The plastic stools, the banh mi carts and the market kitchens are where Vietnam eats best, and none of them take cards.
In markets and with drivers the first price is an opening position. Having the right notes ready settles it faster and usually cheaper.
Buy your dong here so you are not caught out by airport rates on arrival.
A long thin country of limestone bays, lantern-lit old towns and two very different cities at either end - and almost all of it runs on cash.
