About the Indonesian Rupiah
The rupiah is the official currency of Indonesia, issued and regulated by Bank Indonesia. It has been through several redenominations across its history, which is why the numbers on the notes are as large as they are.
One rupiah divides into 100 sen, but sen have been worthless for decades and no longer circulate. Notes run Rp1,000, Rp2,000, Rp5,000, Rp10,000, Rp20,000, Rp50,000 and Rp100,000, and coins cover Rp100, Rp200, Rp500 and Rp1,000.
Bali is the single most visited destination for Australians, and it runs on a mix: hotels, larger restaurants and established shops take cards, while warungs, markets, drivers, temple donations and beach vendors want rupiah in hand.

Indonesia travel money tips
Good to know: count the zeros, every time
This is the rupiah's one real trap. The largest note is Rp100,000, which is only about A$9, so ordinary prices run into the tens and hundreds of thousands. Rp10,000 and Rp100,000 look alike at a glance and are worth ten times different. Check the zeros when you pay and again in your change, especially when you are tired at the airport, and keep your notes sorted by size in your wallet.
Keep small notes for warungs and drivers
Rp10,000, Rp20,000 and Rp50,000 notes cover most day-to-day spending. Nobody at a warung or on a scooter taxi wants to break a Rp100,000.
Use bank ATMs, not street machines
Stick to machines attached to a real bank branch. Standalone ATMs in tourist strips have a poor reputation, and fees per withdrawal are high either way.
Cash gives you room to bargain
In markets and with drivers the price is negotiable, and having the right notes in hand settles it much faster than a card ever will.
